Orient Paper: Story Behind 'Fraud' Report

The reason I moved back to China a few years ago was so that I could get the best possible information on U.S.-listed China small-cap stocks.

Days like today are when that decision really pays off because I got to buy Orient Paper at an absurdly low price with a high degree of confidence despite (and due to) a recently released short-sellers' report stating that the company is a fraud.

China Stocks: Price vs. Fundamentals

BEIJING (TheStreet) -- New Energy Systems (NEWN.OB) announced Friday record revenues and EPS for the quarter ended March 31. In comparison to last year, revenues increased 753% and gross profit increased by more than 800%. EPS increased by more than 300%.

How did the stock react? It fell by nearly 4% on moderate volume solely due to the overall negative sentiment in the market. Contrast this to China Wind Systems which was lucky enough to announce very positive guidance on a strong day in the market.

Duoyuan Printing Sits Pretty in Ugly Market

Stocks with shaky fundamentals and high multiples get hit the hardest in a market downturn and should be avoided when markets look stressed. Examples include solar stocks such as Suntech Power , Trina Solar , Yingli Green Energy, LDK Solar , Canadian Solar and Solarfun. But a market selloff can be a good opportunity to pick up cheap shares of oversold stocks with rock-solid fundamentals. The best example is Duoyuan Printing.

How an Uplisting Works

Questions I've received about the timing of the potential uplisting of Biostar Pharmaceuticals , one of my two favorite potential uplisting plays, makes it clear to me that many people hold a number of misconceptions about uplistings.

So let me post a few facts in response to specific questions people have had. Some of the questions have related to Biostar specifically and some to uplistings in general.

Finding Uplist Clues: Getting in Before Prices Pop

BEIJING (TheStreet) - Sinocoking(SCOK), China Agritech and Puda Coal all saw double digit jumps in their share prices on the day their uplisting was announced. New Energy Systems (NEWN.OB), and Biostar Pharmaceutical both offer the opportunity to still get in before the price pop of an uplisting.

With the Dow hovering back around 11,000 it is getting increasingly difficult to find attractive value stock opportunities. However, by focusing on potential uplisting opportunities it is still possible to find stocks with the potential to double with a relatively low degree of risk.

Biostar: Best Small-Cap Pharma Stock

Biostar Pharmaceuticals has recently applied for a Nasdaq listing and could be a double or triple once it trades on the Nasdaq.

If you happened to have perfect timing during the worst financial crisis since the great depression and bought shares of Bristol Meyers you would now be up by 50%, and that is with the stock currently trading near a 52-week high. That is the absolute best you could do. Shares of Lilly, Pfizer and Merck delivered near identical returns.

China Energy Stock a Buy, Ignore the Math

BEIJING (TheStreet) -- The past 12 months have been very volatile for China battery makers including Advanced Battery Technologies , Hong Kong High Power , New Energy Systems , China Ritar and China Bak Battery . After six months of sitting on the sidelines and doing plenty of analysis, I recently bought back into New Energy Systems and view it as a stock with the potential to double.

I have owned shares of New Energy Systems off and on for about a year. I have a very favorable view of management, the company and the industry.

A123 Illustrates Perils of Wall Street Research

Editor's note: This is the second part of Rick Pearson's look on investing in Chinese small-cap stocks. Here is Part 1.

Supposedly "objective" third-party research should be viewed with a healthy degree of skepticism. Wall Street investment banks have an irreparable conflict of interest when it comes to providing research, due to the connection with generating sales and trading volumes as well as investment banking revenue.

For a good example, look at A123 Systems.

Fuqi Fall Highlights Risk in China Small-Caps

In July 2009, Fuqi International raised $105 million from institutional investors via reputable investment banks, all of whom presumably conducted substantial due diligence given the size of the deal.

In addition, Fuqi has research coverage by several well-known investment banks that have presumably done substantial due diligence and maintained an ongoing dialogue with the company and continued to monitor and analyze the company's financial condition.

A Chinese Stock to Watch

New Energy Systems, SinoCoking and Sino Clean Energy were all stocks that traded at a significant discount to their fair value and subsequently skyrocketed.

China Carbon Graphite has the potential to be the next stock to skyrocket.

In August 2009, I received an email from a New York-based hedge fund manager who was holding a very large position in a small-cap Chinese maker of lithium-ion batteries based in Shenzhen.
