Owens-Illinois shares down 6% on earnings

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Shares of Owens-Illinois fell 5.7% on Thursday, a day after the glass-container manufacturer said after the bell Wednesday that quarterly profit declined 5.5% to $141.1 million, or 85 cents a share. The company said favorable demand in South America and China was offset by sluggish improvement across North America and Europe, while unfavorable foreign currency translation hurt operating profit by $17 million. Adjusted earnings were 90 cents a share, while analysts surveyed by FactSet had expected earnings of 93 cents a share.
